If you saw the band Kool And The Gang back in their hayday, you probably
witnessed J.J. Yates running around as a the bands tour manager. He toured with the famous band for 11 years. Drumming has always been his passion and he’s been doing it since he was a young man preforming with several Princeton High School bands until 1979. He studied music at Central State University and has pretty much been behind a drum set ever since. These days he is the President of Mystic Sound, a pro audio and production company and hangs out in his hometown of Glendale, Oh working with the community center.

Where were you born?

What are you most passionate about?

Music, both playing and producing.

What are the moments in life that stand out as life changing?

It was 2:30am I had just finished a gig with my band. The last thing I remember is pulling to the side of the road because I was having car trouble, When I came to, I realized my truck, cell phone and wallet had all been stolen. I had been mugged and violently beaten. I was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury due to blunt force trauma. After a stay at both University of Cincinnati Medical Center and a nursing home, I was transferred to Drake. The people there are just phenomenal! They do their professional jobs well, and they have the compassion you need to get well. Today, I’m living independently and playing drums again.

If you knew then what you know now...What advise or wisdom would you pass on to the younger generation?

Never stop being grateful now matter where you are in life!

What is one of the things you like most about living in Cincinnati?
